Meet Dr. Chun

Dr ChunKyle F. Chun, MD was born and raised in Wahiawa, Hawaii and graduated from Leilehua High School in 1999 as class valedictorian. He was awarded a full academic Regent’s Scholarship to the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he graduated with highest honors in 2004. While at UH, he was also a member of the NCAA Division I men’s swim team. He then attended the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and graduated in 2008 as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and class president.

Following medical school, Dr. Chun moved his family to Seattle, Washington for his orthopedic surgery residency training at the University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center, widely-regarded as one of the nation’s most elite and highest-ranked orthopedic surgery programs over the past 30 years. While in Seattle, Dr. Chun worked alongside and was mentored by world-renowned experts including Drs. Fredrick Matsen III, Milton “Chip” Routt, and Christopher J. Wahl.

After graduating from his residency training in 2013, Dr. Chun headed south to Los Angeles, California for sub-specialty fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy at the world-famous Southern California Orthopedic Institute, also known as “SCOI.” While there, he was trained in the most cutting-edge techniques in minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to treat disorders of the shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle. At SCOI, he again was mentored by world-famous leaders in the field, including the “father of shoulder arthroscopy,” Dr. Stephen J. Snyder. As part of his fellowship training, Dr. Chun treated multiple professional athletes from the NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB.

Upon his completion of fellowship in 2014, Dr. Chun returned home to Hawaii and joined Orthopedic Associates of Hawaii - the premier sports medicine and orthopedic group in the state. He is currently an assistant clinical professor with the University of Hawaii medical school, and teaches medical students and residents both in and out of the operating room. He has published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. He has also presented his research at multiple national scientific meetings over the course of his training.

Outside of work, Dr. Chun and his wife Lauren (former UH Wahine volleyball player Lauren Duggins) spend time raising their three children Ezekiel, Eve, and Daniel. In his free time, Dr. Chun enjoys hunting, both here and in the mainland, as well as fishing with his family out of Haleiwa.
